Garth Jessamine

We regret to announce that Garth Jessamine passed away on 16 July 2008.  Garth worked in the dental industry for many years for 3M and later running his own company aptly named Garth Jessamine.  Following his retirement, Garth took on the role of Curator for the history section of the BDTA website . . .

The British Dental Trade Association comments on the Health Committee Report on Dental Services

Members of the Health Committee described the report as condemnatory when it was released yesterday.  It certainly contains a fairly damning indictment of the new contract which it says has failed to improve access to NHS dentistry.  It is critical of the UDA payment scheme and of the lack of training given to Primary Care Trusts in how to deal with their new dental responsibilities.  The BDTA welcomes the report, which highlights many of the concerns that have been voiced by the industry.  In particular, the BDTA is pleased to see that the Committee has called for an urgent enquiry into the reason for the dramatic fall in complex treatments and on the long-term effects that this will have on the oral health of patients . . .

BDA Masterclass launched with the support of the BDTA

BDA Masterclass, a dedicated new business education programme for dentists from the British Dental Association that is supported by the British Dental Trade Association, was introduced to the profession at the 2008 British Dental Conference and Exhibition at the Manchester Central Convention Complex. A special stand was set up in the upper foyer at the complex where visitors were able to meet the team behind the course and learn more about this unique business education programme designed specifically for dental practitioners . . .

BDTA Staff pass the Introduction to Dentistry Course

Introduction to Dentistry is a course aimed at equipping students with a general understanding of the dental industry and the work of the dental team.  The course offers coverage of a wide array of topics, ranging from dental anatomy, oral diseases, laboratory procedures, the regulatory framework in the UK plus anaesthesia and infection control in dentistry.  The BDTA’s Code of Practice requires that, as a minimum, all the relevant staff within a member company should have attained the BDTA Certificate - Introduction to Dentistry within two years of commencing employment, and this rule also applies to the staff at the BDTA. . .

BDTA Midwinter Meeting 2007

The BDTA held its annual Midwinter Meeting on 6 December 2007, returning to the magnificent Edwardian styled One Great George Street, London, the home of the Institute of Civil Engineers.

One hundred delegates, primarily from BDTA member companies, attended the event which commenced with business sessions, followed by lunch and networking.

Equipment and oral hygiene questionnaire 2007

Over 200 dentists participated in the BDTA’s equipment and oral hygiene research in August 2007.  Dentists were asked about their purchasing patterns between January to December 2006.

BDTA exhibition research

The BDTA commissioned market research to be undertaken amongst visitors to this year’s BDTA Dental Showcase.  Almost 400 questionnaires were completed by professional interviewers over the three day event to gauge attitudes towards dental exhibitions and influences on purchasing decisions.

Norman Freedman receives The British Dental Trade Association Award

There are moments in history where ‘before’ and ‘after’ are clearly defined. The dental industry owes one of those moments to Norman Freedman. He was one of the first to recognise the opportunities of mail order operations, resulting in dramatically improved customer service levels and introducing the concept of next day delivery.

A magical feel to Showcase 2007

The British Dental Trade Association is delighted to announce its most successful Dental Showcase to date. 

A total of 347 stands exhibited the latest dental products, technologies and services to 11,876 visitors who attended the exhibition at the NEC Birmingham (18–20 October 2007).  It makes Dental Showcase 2007 the biggest yet in terms of both visitor and exhibitor numbers.  The exhibition covered a massive 20,000sqm, the most floor space ever allocated to Showcase.

Showcase advert tops the poll!

The advertising campaign for BDTA Dental Showcase 2007 has won the award for the ‘most outstanding advertising’, according to a recent survey commissioned by BDA News.  It is the second consecutive year the BDTA has received the award.

Peter Rees steps down as BDTA President

The BDTA would like to extend its thanks to Peter Rees of Dentsply, who has served as President of the BDTA for the past eighteen months.  Peter will step down as President from 31 August 2007 following his resignation from Dentsply UK.
