BDTA response to The Steele Report The BDTA welcomes the Steele Report and its comprehensive summary of the challenges facing NHS dentistry in the future. The accent on building the relationship between patient and dentist and improving the amount of information available to patients aligns very much with BDTA policy, as does the emphasis on providing a quality service to all patients. The report is critical of the current contract, saying that it has failed to deliver in some areas, particularly in the field of prevention, but it recognises the growing role that the contract is playing in allowing PCT’s to allocate resources where they are most needed. A good time to purchase equipment Scarcely a day goes by without another tale of economic gloom with worse forecast for the coming year. According to the British Chambers of Commerce the economy is deteriorating at a ‘frightening’ speed with their survey of members painting a ‘distressing and ominous’ picture. There is a mood of pessimism engulfing the country. And yet supermarkets have reported good sales figures and are talking of taking on new staff. Internet sales are also buoyant. The banks are being encouraged to start lending again. Dentistry has been ‘recession proof’ in previous downturns and most practices are reporting relatively full appointment books, for now at any rate. In the past practices have, on the whole, survived. The British Dental Trade Association comments on the Health Committee Report on Dental Services Members of the Health Committee described the report as condemnatory when it was released yesterday. It certainly contains a fairly damning indictment of the new contract which it says has failed to improve access to NHS dentistry. It is critical of the UDA payment scheme and of the lack of training given to Primary Care Trusts in how to deal with their new dental responsibilities. The BDTA welcomes the report, which highlights many of the concerns that have been voiced by the industry. In particular, the BDTA is pleased to see that the Committee has called for an urgent enquiry into the reason for the dramatic fall in complex treatments and on the long-term effects that this will have on the oral health of patients . . .
